These extracts are shown with the title, author and year of the book, and can be found either by exploring books that are nearest to your current location, or by browsing the map and selecting pins to see how far that place is from you, and what texts are mentioned there. Kristeva describes the text as a âpermutation of texts, an intertextuality,â and by doing so gestures to the idea that âin the space of a given text, several utterances, taken from other texts, intersect and neutralize one another.â Differently put, a text is not merely comprised of other texts, but of âutterancesâ, a product of âthe productive violence of the involvement, entanglement, interruption and inhibition of disciplines [and texts] in and on each other.â This notion of a âproductive violenceâ mirrors both, the destructive and the accommodative nature of the palimpsest. Tara Thomson is introducing Doug Johnstone, a notable Edinburgh crime writer who is also the judge of our writing competition. A palimpsest is âa parchment or other writing surface on which the original text has been effaced or partially erased, and then overwritten by another; a manuscript in which later writing has been superimposed on earlier (effaced) writing.â In other words, a palimpsest is a âmulti-layered record.â In the Middle Ages, these parchments were created from vellum, which was then recycled due to scarcity. Not the writing which comes out of Edinburgh, but the writing that is about Edinburgh, that takes Edinburgh as it’s setting and it’s resonance as a city. This multifarious and diverse vision projected by the palimpsest, despite being the product of an attempt of destruction and erasure, demands a revision of conceptual systems based on the notions of fixity, linearity, centre and hierarchy. From the Old Town, with its dark, winding closes and looming gothic spires, watched over by the castle perched on craggy cliffs, to the New Town with its elegant rows of Georgian houses, public gardens and dramatic vistas out over the Forth, Edinburgh has inspired countless writers. But in his field notes he describes the crags in the language of geology. Among them Daniel Defoe’s ‘A Tour through the Whole Island of Great Britain’ gave us an image of the Netherbow, while Boswell’s account of his meeting with Samuel Johnson in the Black Bull Inn and their stroll up the mile together gave a visceral sense stench of the overcrowded slums, and Robert Fergusson’s Auld Reekie painted a picture of a ruined Holyrood House, once a great palace but then a squatters sanctuary: For O, waes me! Edinburgh is a conspicuous absence in Scottish Modernism. It is disparity.â Therefore, while the cumulative archaeological palimpsest, on the surface tries to present a multi-temporal and utopian intermingling of cultures, an attempt at unravelling the palimpsest reveals its violent and disruptive impulses.
